second transmission from distant worlds comes courtesy of derek carr (for those that knoe, where we met, why so series). his music has been turning heads since the turn of the millenium but only in the last few years has he been getting the recognition he deserves. his productions have a timeless, celestial quality and reward multiple listens, there is always a hint of subtle beauty about his work and this is no exception. scisor and wraith are built for the club whilst fading fast and sunrise in system will work equally well in a club or for home listening. more than a nod to detroit in these productions but all unmistakeably carr productions.

andreas tilliander released his first album as mokira at the very turn of the millennium on almighty raster noton. 11 years later, the latest mokira album time axis manipulation was issued on ulf erikssons kontra-musik and now it s time to pick up where we left off with chill out . there s an air of happy retrospect and light solemnity surrounding the new album - enhanced by the fact that it marks kontra-musik s 50th release. with chill out , mokira attempts to bring back the dreamlike state from those magical late nights of his youth spent in front of mtv s chill out zone, to go back to his ambient roots using contemporary techniques and perspectives. the result? well, imagine lee scratch perry and klf enjoying an episode of stranger things on a crappy vintage tv after being hard at work burying old tape recordings in perry s tropical garden. imagine them sitting together totally at peace in a big, cosy sofa while a heavy haze is building up in the room, pleasantly affecting the eerie images on the screen. we always knew kontra-musik s 50th release had to be something quite out of the ordinary. as expected, mokira didn t disappoint us one bit. the vinyl lp is accompanied with a download code for a mixed version of the album, containing almost double the amount of tracks. the mixed version makes it easy for the chill out listener to just sit back and let go of reality for a while, just like mokira did 25 years ago in front of his old tv.

initially described as superlative 25th century electronic exotica by cowboy rhythmbox themselves, the fourth ep from phantasys in-house trouble and hitmakers received support from top jocks including dixon, jackmaster and marcel dettmann. now, i’s dynamic lead track is rejigged, expanded upon and shot through with analogue energy by two equally inventive producer pairings. fellow outsiders on the inside of the house of house, israels finest red axes take the first turn, coaxing the cosmos out of the original and allowing the bewildering vocal samples to lead the way through waves of more than pleasurable cosmic tension. soon, with the timing just right, feet to pedals and strobe to hand, the pair unleash a series of distorted guitar licks that blow dust off the stacks, even throwing in a sharp blast of their trademark surrealist vocals for extra freaky fx. on the flip, marvin and guy zone out and hone in on the originals ebm-indebted elements to contribute a trippy, wave-riding electro rework that oscillates irresistibly. teasing listeners with a playful, almost naive synth line, the mood shimmers instead with uncompromising acid, as the pair ultimately push the modulars into strange and hypnotic territories to get lost in.

after an excellent first release featuring freerotation lynchpin steevio, russ gabriels rivers of groove label returns with a pair of excursions into lush, bubbling techno from gabriel on his own. as a first generation uk techno stalwart, its little wonder that he can turn out productions as accomplished as these, but there s no sense that he s treading water. ambulate bears the hallmarks of modular production, all twinkling, morphing synth tones chiming around a delicate beat, while dover calling favours a snappier electro palette, but both stand out from the crowd for the sheer quality in the production, the warmth in the composition and the needlepoint focus given to every shred of detail in this crucial cuts.

guttural, pained screams from beyond converge with mangled corrosive rhythms on the sophomore ep from dint for horo. ‘hooker’ convenes an impromptu post punk band out of undead skeletal pulses and spits a frustrated barb to anyone in earshot. ’shovel’ slams nails in relentlessly with an excruciating vocal refrain grinding over the band of zombies undulating bass riff, decaying as it loops. ’skewer’ drags the undead to the dance-floor with a primitive rhythm that rises and ducks, wringing out the intensity with macabre vocal commands reaching through a wall of distortion. on remix duties, ontal turn shovel into a peak time industrial techno weapon, while anfs grinds skewer into a jagged amen experiment, and codex empire fuses shovel and skewer into an anthemic sludge. oake wraps up the experience by taking hooker into another realm, convening another band of tortured souls stuck in purgatory, wrecking the rhythms with adrenaline-fuelled pitch black energy.

long time friend of the label, neue grafik, steps forth with his most fully realised offering to date. this record has been a long time coming, born out of a encounter in paris back in 2016. this meeting of minds led to a blossoming friendship between fred ( neue grafik) and bradley ( rs intl) which has taken them across 3 continents, countless dance-floors and finally crystallised onto this 12-. the record itself takes cues from the broken-beat sound of london while paying homage to the parisian house dance scene. largely sample based, but also employing much more live instrumentation than ever before, neue grafik s music is informed by movement and in turn offers so much for dancers to respond to.

a four track ep from slum village co-founder, former bling47 label boss and current head of the dirt tech reck label, waajeed. the detroit native has worked previously with theo parrish, mad mike banks and amp fiddler, and in 2017 held a residency at detroit love parties across the globe. ‘mother’, featuring detroit singer-songwriter steffanie christi an, is driven by an arpeggiated synth lead above shuffling percussion and heartfelt vocals, whilst ‘earth’, a collaboration with the enigmatic blaktony, takes a moodier turn with stripped back drums and syncopated keys. ‘obba’ rides a melodic bassline into the cosmos, whilst ‘frances’ offers a soothing dose of otherworldly disco funk. additional mixing on the ep was provided by planet e head carl craig

viers clocks back in on figure duty, showing up with up for another strong statement of his unmistakenly singular style. here he is working it from all angles: straight up and searingly stoic techno opener let my mind breath is grinding away grittily, while things turn surprisingly bouncy, as genesis dishes out electrifying boom-bap-breakbeats, transporting imagery of neo-futuristic tokyo streets. as night sets in, so does the kinetic groove of oyasumi, which twirls layers of energetic movement into a thick current, zooming through the citys deep gorges of concrete and fiber glass. closing track data entry 4590 finally provides some soothing ambient tones of melancholic longing, inviting to slowly drift away into white-washed nothingness and process the bright color storm that viers lets unfold on this intense record.

the grand, sweeping sonic explorations of “pretoria”, from john matthias and jay auborn’s 2017 album “race to zero”, are given new life on this four-track remix ep.
moon gangs (better known as william young, keyboardist in bristol-based electronic outfit beak>) takes the reins first, delivering a thunderous take on the original’s faster-paced second half. typically of the artist, the track builds and builds in intensity, climaxing with an apocalypse of emotional, layered synths.
bristol’s cuts strips back the elements for a much darker reworking. a single, repeating piano note echoes into wide, open space alongside the original’s antique violins before clattering percussion and synths enter the mix for the most foreboding turn of the release.
closing the ep, former mogwai member john cummings also bases his reinterpretation around the original’s piano. but where cuts leans on moody darkness, cummings take is more upbeat, courtesy of a driving four to the floor kick and fidgety, high-pitched piano.

formerly of france, now based in brazil, d3 elements returns with their second instalment of the beatz series, this time with jazz artist, bruno e, also hailing from brazil. bruno, who has been producing and performing since the late 90s, has worked with and remixed the likes of silhouette brown and gilles peterson, as well as releasing albums in his own right. this limited colour 10inch release features three versions of the track ventos do outono, (loosely translated to autumn winds). first up is drummer, composer and producer, pat van dyke, taking a break from composing the soundtrack to jerry seinfeld s comedians in cars getting coffee, with a breezy, laid back version of the original. featuring lush horns and flutes, along with vintage keyboards, the track urges us to get down, while straddling the boundaries of jazz and golden era hip-hop. still on the a side, it s bruno s turn, delivering a wonderful broken beat track. full of beautiful keys, strings and intricate rhythms, this track is reminiscent of the sound championed by kaidi tatham and nu era. flip over to the b side, and techno legend, kirk de giorgio takes us on a deep, futuristic ride. the track starts off with banging drums and a pulsating bass line, priming us for the cosmic pads and keys to come as the uk producer takes us on a journey to outer space and back. another quality release from bryan hervieus label, with three diverse versions of the same track, sure to appeal to a wide variety of tastes

four 140 bpm bass bangers from the grime wonder boy boylan (who also has some history in drum and bass, releasing for the likes of the legendary bad company) and the grime godfather dj slimzee, co-founder of rinse fm, member of the legendary pay as u go cartel and owner of slimzos recordings, slimzee is a key figure of first generation grime who shot to international underground fame at the turn of the millennium, alongside partners in grime wiley and dizzee rascal. boylan and slimzee make an outstanding production duo and this debut ep is a testament to that, these beats leave a trail of destruction anywhere that they are played around the world, while crossing 140 boundaries and delivering unique bass music with weighty attitude.

sold out - its that time of year when thoughts turn to lazy afternoons down the beach, early evenings sat watching white isle sunsets and sticky nights of loved-up debauchery. in other words, it s the perfect time to dive into the latest volume in the consistet balearic compilation series. there s naturally much to admire in the now-familiar cafe del mar/cafe mambo style, from the horizontal, flute-laden samba shuffle of the madrigals the ride to the moon and shay lovers exceedingly drowsy black & white, to the warm chords and head nodding beats of steve cobby s remix of tradewinds- by penelope antena, and tropical exuberance of maajos musa paradisa. best of all, though, is mudd s impeccable mix for emma of zee erf s blissful cover of southern freeez, which is one of the most stunning tracks you ll hear all year.

it s been a while since we last heard from flord king, who has popped up on junk yard connections as well as regularly featuring on lyssna. it s the latter label he returns to now, and he s got some focused, stripped down club fare to impart. -el klassiko- is a shuffling, funky minimal house jam with some wriggling melodies and a subby bass throb, while -avocado in blue- does a quirkier turn with some crafty synth flex that really stands out from the crowd. -bob- too is a distinctive cut with some detailed layers of dubby ripples and errant computer debris quivering and shaking over the mellow pads and steady beat. -deep diff- twists out some cheeky bass and an overall emotive mood that ends the record on a poignant tip.

lmds first ever collaboration ep * echoes of paradise* by shaun soomro & mikael stavostrand gets reworked. legendary cult producer josh brent reworks * street code symphony* in classic schatrax esque style turning it into a beautiful timeless cut. it recalls his best works as schatrax - sparse, jacking, lush and dreamy with a sense of mystery created by a master crafts man who set the blueprint for this sound. shaun soomro’s re-vision of paradise lost takes things in a completely different direction also, but in heavyweight dub mode. drawing its groove from a mesmerising sub bass, shaun layers and recomposes from the first violin recording session & plays in new string segments that blossom and develop the more you listen, creating a epic symphonic dub masterpiece. one for the late night warriors! both artists turn out exceptional reworks primed for those special dance floor moments

jonny nash (guissian curve / melody is truth) and firecracker s lindsay todd get barefoot and turn out a stunner of an lp. over the course of twelve compositions we find the pair utilising their recordings in a whole host of ways, avoiding the well-trodden cliches of the exotic and instead attempting to achieve a personal interpretation of the flora, fauna and climate of the island. spending time amidst the insects, rice fields and scorching sun, the pair gathered a library of found sounds which were then taken back to a studio space to be stretched, mangled and manipulated alongside a variety of electronic and acoustic instruments. the outdoor studio itself became a living instrument, with the duo setting up multiple microphones for durations of up to 12 hours around the space, layering and processing the results in tracks such as fauna mapping and a series of small frogs

a firm favourite with the hot creation camp, jey kurmis returns to the label with his jessycat ep. following acclaimed releases lil’ nic french, kari and not too flabbeh on the imprint, we once again see the talented producer at the top of his game. the ep stays true to jey’s trademark sound as the producer delivers three tracks to take the dancefloor through to the small hours. the ep opens with jessycat, a bubbling tribal affair that implores you to move. an array of vocals bleeds into the record taking you on a journey to outer space. fien features co-producers nukov & yelmet and takes a darker turn with a rumbling bass and intense vocals that state “my head spinning like a merry go”. the outer space sounds continue into closing track vanstone, unfolding with a swinging bass and distorted stabs. part of the industry from more than a decade, jey kurmis has previously released on labels such as, moon harbour, leftroom and kaluki. taking his dj skills to new levels he has played the world’s hottest parties- from sonar to bpm, and the warehouse project to dc10. the leed’s based music maker has also commanded residencies at do not sleep and paradise.

following up drawn with shadow pens on spectrum spools, belgian sound artist yves de mey returns with bleak comfort , his third solo full-length. geared towards serving up an intense musical experience, the album deconstructs regular club music to highlight some of its key elements in a transformative way. an album about absence, malfunction and disorientation, bleak comfort is equally packed with floor-functional material and left-of-centre electronics. by turn sizzling and spherical, convulsive and atmospheric, yves de mey ushers his listener in a hypnotic kaleidoscope of sounds, providing a fascinating picture of his ever dynamic grammar at variable scales and tempos.

faze action records, (far), next release unearths the disco wonder of unreleased music by andromeda orchestra. the lead track has been expertly remixed by legendary dj nick the record, extending the percussion, bass, keyboard sections and then teasing in the vocals towards the end to turn the track into a peak time disco burner which sits comfortably alongside disco old and new. on a2 we have high steppin which see s andromeda orchestra heading for a more stripped down instrumental track, tight percussion and keys drive home another floor filler. b1 we have the original mix of get up & dance, staying true to a classic disco arrangement. with b2 ,andromeda orchestra exit with a more laid back funk/disco groove perfect for the warm up.

recorded while gerald was in jamaica working on a project with lee perry in 1980. the master tapes of the four tracks that were recorded at the harry j sessions were only recently discovered. utopia was the only track that had been given a final mix back in the day. it was released on 7- on the black star liner later in the year and then reissued on partial records in 2014. the other tracks were never mixed until early 2017 when this task was undertaken by dougie wardrop. as well as mixing jerusalem (gerald did a later version of this tune for rej forte s jah works label in the early 1990s), working for the dollar and constant spring , it was decided that utopia should also enjoy a fresh mix.

rave or die is delighted to welcome another techno rave pioneer into the fold. neil landstrumm (tresor, peacefrog) has been the key figure of the scottish experimental sound for more than two decades now, multiplying nasty cuts under numerous disguises including die fly die, navario sauro or polaris whilst spearheading future funk on his well known scandinavia records. on rod number nine, neil teams up with edinburg producer and sativae founder dave tarrida to deliver a banging morocco tune made of pumpin basslines and crunching breaks! these guys are no joke when it comes to set fire on the dancefloor. on the flipside, rod mastermind umwelt strikes back with (u=e-rl), an enigmatic equation and most probably the secret formula to smoke warehouses! old schoolish grooves with some extra muscle acid lines fused into heavy kicks turn this mental track a la the mover into an ode to rave music. a perfect combo of 4/4 anthems in their purest and primitive form, a 10inch that melds disparate sounds with scary intends!

possession records proudly present the new album by soft riot, entitled -the outsider in the mirrors-. soft riot is the stylised musical alter-ego of jjd, canadian by birth and an ex-resident of london and sheffield, now based in glasgow (so not unfamiliar with sites of post-industrial decay!). with over twenty years of playing in various post-punk and synth-punk bands, he has been crafting the sound of soft riot since the early turn of the decade, releasing a slew of albums across a multitude of labels and touring obsessively around europe and beyond. with -the outsider in the mirrors-, his sixth full-length, he has found a new home for his sound on possession records, a fledgling glasgow imprint founded by jjd, claudia nova (aka hausfrau) and andy brown (ubre blanca). their aim is to bring together their pool of musical talents and provide a more permanent home for their future creative endeavours, whether it be music, video or otherwise and to experiment with what it is to be a -label- in the ever evolving 21st century. future projects and releases will see them getting a select group of their peers and friends involved in possession s focused vision, locally or from further afield.

jungle/breakcore legends deformer are back with another horror infused release: “the living dead deformed”. deformer is known for putting the shock into electronic music and pushing the horror experience to another level. during their shows they cut off limbs and intestines are thrown into the audience while the extreme music turns the crowd into raging freaks. “the living dead deformed” pays hommage to one of the biggest horrorfilm classics of all time: “night of the living dead” (1968) and its creators.
the record was produced before the unfortunate passing of george a. romero. out of respect, deformer chose put out the record as a non-profit, limited edition, numbered by hand, green coloured vinyl release. the amazing cover art is created by legendary visual artist graham humphreys (a nightmare on elm street, the evil dead, poltergeist).

the second release from cassys new collaborative label kwench records sees new york native fred p turn in three stellar remixes of cassy & demuirs please me from the labels inaugural release from november. the remit for each release on the label is for two (or more) collaborating artists to produce original material, whilst a different artist will deliver one remix. however, after hearing three fantastic interpretations from fred p, cassy was adamant that the tracks were so special, they had to have their own release.
